Special Collections > NAIDOC Week at LIB
NAIDOC Week is celebrated in the first week of July to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. Here at LOST IN BOOKS, we are celebrating NAIDOC Week with this curated selection of some of our best books by First Nations authors!
Australia has always been a place of many languages. At LOST IN BOOKS, we celebrate not only the stories but also the languages of First Nations people. While more than 250 distinct First Nations languages were once spoken across Australia, each with many distinct dialects; as of 2016 less than half of those are still spoken, with 90% of those that remain considered endangered by AIATSIS and the Endangered Languages Project. We support the reclamation and rediscovery of languages across Australia; and look forward to a future where multilingualism is once again part of our national identity.
