Lao Li is a farm cow, taken care of by the 10-year-old girl Guier and treated like a family member. Guier meets Uncle Egret who teaches her reading and life wisdom through stories. Guier's cow is ageing and facing the prospect of being slaughtered. Guier and Uncle Egret keep saving it from imminent death... The story was inspired by the childhood accounts by the author's mother.
