The smell of burnt wood was everywhere. Everywhere, all the plains, even the well where Bijan was imprisoned. Bijan smelled the flaming branches. Like a blind man who has no eyes, his world was given meaning by sounds and smells. He did not know whether this fire illuminates his dark days or not. He did not know whether he would embrace his consolation before dawn or not. He breathed a sigh of relief. The well filled with a sigh. He missed the ground that embraced the night, he missed the edge of the well and stared at the fire for Manijeh who was standing.

بوی چوب سوخته همه‌جا پیچیده بود. همه‌جا٬ تمام دشت٬ حتی چاهی که بیژن درآن زندانی بود. بیژن عطرشاخه‌های شعله‌ور را حس می‌کرد. مثل نابینایی که چشم دیدن ندارد٬ دنیایش را باصداها و بوها معنا می‌بخشید. نمی‌دانست این آتش٬ روزگار تاریکش را روشن می‌کند یا نه؟ نمی‌دانست تا پیش ازسپیده‌دم دلدارش را در برخواهد گرفت یا نه؟ هوا را با نقسی بلند به سینه داد. چاه از صدای آهش پرشد. دلش برای زمینی که شب را در آغوش کشیده بود٬ تنگ شد٬ برای منیژه که ایستاده بود لبه‌ی چاه و خیره بود به آتش.
