Hailed as one of the best works for children by To Hoai, "The Story of Mèn the Cricket" was first published in Hanoi in 1941. Originally it included the first three chapters of this book. Following its popularity and with considerable support, Su Hoai later wrote the "Cricket Men Adventure", whcih formed the last seven chapters of completing the book as it is known today. "Diary of a cricket " is included in the Vietnamese school curricuum for Vietnamese language arts. It is translated into more than 40 languages making it the most translated of all Vietnamese books.
The story follows a cricket called Mèn on his journey in the world. At the start Mèn is stubborn, arrogant and at times aggresive, but he gradually transforms, his physical journey being a metaphor for the evolution of his spirit and emotional intelligence. Mèn's adventures teach lessons in kindness, compassion and acceptance, It shows the benefits of self-awareness and discipline. It celebrates hard work, friendship and judging others by their deeds not looks. It teaches how to correct one's own mistakes.

Tô Hoài (1920-2014) was a prominent Vietnamese writer, playwright, screenwriter, journalist and correspondent. He wrote for children, adults and people from all walks of life, telling stories of ordinary lives, stories of Hà Nội and changes in society as well as created his own tales. In 1996 he won the inaugural Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature for his contribution to VIetnamese culture.Many of his books were recognised individually through various awards in Vietnam and abroad.
